Underground Electric Dog Fence

!±8± Underground Electric Dog Fence

An underground electric dog fence is a great way to keep your dog safe from the street or roaming into uninvited areas like your neighbor's yard. They come in a variety of sizes to fit all dogs: underground fences for little dogs of under 12 lbs, average sized dogs and even large dogs as well as extra wire for larger acres of land. The electric fence can be buried underground, stapled above ground or attached along an existing fence. These fences give precise and consistent correction and some are specifically made for the stubborn dog with strong retriever tendencies or low sensitivity and in need of beeps and stronger vibration for them to get the message.

These underground wired fences work on slopes or in hilly areas, treed lots, in water and acres of land. Their precision and consistent correction capabilities allow for good reliability near busy streets. The variety of collars that are interchangeable make them great for small dogs, like a Chihuahua or a large dog like a Great Dane.

A small indentation or groove made in the pavement is big enough for the wire to be brought beyond the driveway to the extended yard making the dog fence very practical, just backfill the driveway with outdoor sealant. If you don't want to buy wire get the staples and run the wire above ground. Zip ties can help you secure the wire along an existing fence.

Correction depends upon the dog receiving the transmission. Therefore, you need to make sure that the receiver collar is the right size for your dog. It should not be smaller than the space of your two fingers between the collar and his neck (we don't want to choke poor "Pooch"!), but the prongs need to touch the skin of your dog in order for the shock to be felt. Remember, it's a harmless shock that is meant to catch your dog's attention and change his current behavior. Long or medium haired dogs may need a scissor cut around the neck area so the prongs will contact the skin. If necessary, there are long pronged collars available for the long haired dog as well.

We love our dogs but, let's face it, nothing is certain with them for dogs are naturally impulsive. Therefore, even with the underground electric dog fence training is imperative if you want a great chance of solid obedience. We highly recommend training the dog before actually using any system. Flags are available for training the dog to learn the boundary. Take 2-3 weeks, depending on your dog, to walk around the boundary with the flags so "Pooch" can see where the boundary is. Then place the collar on him and walk around with him guiding him to retreat when the signal on the collar transmits a warning. Before you know it, your dog will readily stay within the boundary of the underground electric dog fence without your presence because he won't know that he can run through it!

Use an Electric Dog Fence to Keep Your Dogs From Running Away

!±8± Use an Electric Dog Fence to Keep Your Dogs From Running Away

When you first get a new puppy or dog, one of the first things that you will need to do is figure out how you are going to keep the dog from running away and in your own yard. Buying and placing a fence in the yard is an expensive and high maintenance chore. Luckily today you have the opportunity to buy an electric dog fence that is affordable and easy to setup.

This electric fence gives you the peace of mind knowing that your dog isn't going to run away and you don't have to enclose the yard with an unattractive fence to do so. This way, your dog can play and run free without you having to worry about it going too far.

There are a few different types of electric fences you can get to keep your dog safe and sound in the comforts of your own property. You can get an underground or wireless electric dog fence. Here's a brief explanation about how both of them work.

The underground fence works by the owner (you) placing a small strip of wire around the property. You can dig a very small trench on the boundaries where you want to limit the dog from going. Most underground fences come included with ties and/or staples so you can place the wire on posts rather than having to dig it in.

The electric fence works as a training vehicle for your dog so that it starts to learn where its boundaries are. Whenever the dog gets close to the wired fence, an electric signal is sent through the collar of the dog and delivers a short yet non-harmful electric shock to the dog.

With time, the dog will make the associative connection of where its boundaries are, and will no longer go near where it is supposed to go. Certain boundary markers like flags are also a good idea so that the dog can make a visual connection of its boundaries as well. Eventually, the dog will not go beyond its boundaries even if the fence and/or collar are not activated.

A wireless electric dog fence works in the same regard as the underground fence, but it instead sends a radio transmission signal to the collar. If the dog ventures out of the range of the signal (you can set it to transmit as far as you want) it will deliver the shock.

Training Collars For Dogs - Humane Or Not?

!±8± Training Collars For Dogs - Humane Or Not?

Not all training collars for dogs are alike. Different models have different purposes and produce different results. The bark collar for dogs is used to stop barking while a sport dog collar is used in training dogs like Labs.

The main question that people ask is "is it humane to use a shock collar on a dog"? That can only be answered by the individual themselves, but another question may be asked to help answer that question; "is it humane to let an out-of-control dog bite a neighbors child"? Is it humane to let your dog bark all night and keep your neighbors awake?

A dog barking collar is one of the quickest and easiest way imaginable to stop a dog from barking. When a dog is contained outside, the barking problem will be worse because there is no one around at all times to discipline the dog. If you have ever gotten out of a warm bed at midnight to hush a barking dog, the bark collar has a different meaning.

Most training collars have hand-held remotes that can send an audible warning or a vibrating warning that will give the dog a chance of self-correct before receiving stimulation. This stimulation can be compared to a static electrical shock we may receive after rubbing our feet across the carpet with socks on. Knowing when and how to use the stimulation is very important for the dog owner.

Most training collars for dogs have levels of intensity. Dogs are somewhat like people in many ways and pain tolerance is one of those ways. This is where the issue of being humane comes in. If a dog can be trained using a low level of intensity it is not be humane to user a stronger level. I have watched dogs that would not even flinch at low-level stimulation and I have seen other dogs that would respond to low-level stimulation like it was really painful.

There are also various methods used to train dogs using a remote shock collar, such as, low-level stimulation just prior to a command and then releasing once the dog obeys. An example would be to press the low-level stimulation and within two seconds command the dog to sit. After the dog sits, the button is released and the dog is praised. This teaches the dog to sit quickly and on the first command. On the other hand some had rather teach the dog the sit command other ways and then just enforce the command if the dog does not sit.

I know the pros and cons of training with or without a collar having trained my dog to the Hunting Retriever Champion level. I would never attempt to train a dog without the shock collar but I also spent a lot of time reading and observing others before I got started. I would suggest that everyone purchase a book about using the training collars for dogs.
